Cycling infrastructure

In 2018, East Sussex County Council commissioned Sustrans to conduct a comprehensive review of cycling infrastructure in Hastings, and prepare a comprehensive action plan1.

in 2020, East Sussex County Council (ESCC) voted to accept these recommendations2 in to the County-wide Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan, the LCWIP3. This plan runs until 2030 and is ESCC’s sole plan to improve cycling infrastructure.

In 2024, HUB made a Freedom of Information Request to ESCC to establish how much funding has been allocated, and how much of the LCWIP has been delivered.

According to a FOI request made by HUB to ESCC, since 2020 £10.6 million of funding has been allocated to cycling and walking infrastructure, yet not a single infrastructure project or kilometer of new bike path has been delivered across the whole of East Sussex.

HUB’s position is that this is completely unacceptable and, particularly given the climate crisis, HUB will be taking increasingly vocal steps to hold ESCC to account. ESCC’s LCWIP has been carefully designed, planned, approved at a council vote, and is funded. Yet there is still no sign whatsoever of it being delivered.
